Itinerary

DAY 1 – Fly to Minneapolis, Minnesota

Arrive in Minneapolis and collect your rental car in preparation for the next day. Settle in at your hotel for dinner, or, venture into the city for dinner & drinks to explore the nightlife.

Overnight: Minneapolis

DAY 2 – Minneapolis to Fargo, North Dakota (250miles)

In the morning, depart for Fargo, North Dakota. Settled on the Minnesota-North Dakota border, this thriving university city is home to a bustling downtown and a number of attractions including Red River Zoo, Fargo Air Museum and the world-famous wood chipper from the movie named after the city. Fargo is also proud of its Nordic heritage which is preserved at the Heritage-Hjemkomst Center. If you like a tipple then don’t miss the local microbreweries!

Overnight: Fargo

DAY 3 – Fargo to Bismarck, North Dakota (200miles)

On your way to Bismarck, stop in Jamestown to see the world’s largest buffalo; a 60 tonne concreate statue standing at 26 feet tall. The neighbouring National Buffalo Museum is home to a live herd and you can learn the history of the rare white bison in the museum. The twin cities of Bismarck and Mandan are divided by the Missouri river. Bismarck is a large city with plenty to see and do. Spend the evening in the downtown area sampling one of the eclectic restaurants.

DAY 4 - Bismarck

Spend the morning at the North Dakota Heritage Center and State Museum working your way through the four galleries which tell the fascinating story of North Dakota through thousands of artefacts and specimens, high-tech displays, and interactive exhibits. Then cross the river into Mandan to visit the Native American Earth Lodges, or walk in the footsteps of General Custer at Fort Abraham Lincoln.

Overnight: Bismarck

Day 5 – Bismarck to Watford City (230 miles)

Head north to Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site where Lewis and Clark met Sakakawea in 1804. Continue your journey to the charming old town of Garrison. Don’t miss Ye Olde Malt Shoppe on Main Street; a retro restaurant that will take you back in time. Head to Fort Berthold Indian Reservation to pay tribute to the Native American warriors who served in times of war and peace. Visit the new MHA Nation Heritage Center to finish your day before your final drive to Watford City.

Overnight: Watford City

Day 6 – Watford City to Medora (100 miles)

Just 15 miles south from Watford City is Theodore Roosevelt National Park North Unit. Stop at the visitor centre to find walking trails to explore or take the North Unit Scenic Drive, 28 miles out and back, which trails the Badlands and takes you to the iconic River Bend Overlook. Continue south to Medora to spend an afternoon strolling the streets and local sites, catch up with The Roosevelts on the Joe Ferris General Store Lawn or visit the Cowboy Hall of Fame. Enjoy dinner at the nationally acclaimed Pitchfork Steak Fondue followed by a the rootin-tootin, boot-scootin outdoor Medora Musical!

Day 7 – Theodore Roosevelt National Park South Unit

Enjoy a leisurely day exploring Theodore Roosevelt National Park along the 36-mile scenic drive– spotting its wildlife and walking along the meandering Missouri River. Stop at the Maltese Cross cabin and visitor centre to experience Roosevelt’s early life as a rancher in the area. Take a drive through the North Dakota Badlands to view the impressive natural erosion caused by wind, rain and fire.

Overnight: Medora

 

Day 8 – Medora to Bismarck (150 miles)

For your final drive, head east to Bismarck, detouring at exit 72 to experience the Enchanted Highway, a 32mile stretch lined with large metal sculptures, ending in Regent where you will find a gift shop containing mini versions of your favourites. Once back in Bismarck return your hire car and board your connecting flight home.
